West Wilts Wagglers take on Chippenham GC in annual Ryder Cup Clash West Wilts Wagglers take on Chippenham GC in annual Ryder Cup Clash

In a friendly local Derby, whose origins are lost in the mists of time, West Wilts Wagglers competed against Chippenham GC over the period 5th to 7th April for The Ryder Cup Trophy. West Wilts GC Wagglers' Captain 2019, Bert Weedon, led his intrepid band of 24 worthies down to Porthpean GC in St Austell, Cornwall, staying at the superb 5 star Carlyon Bay Hotel which catered for a golfer's every need. The weather vacillated between ever so friendly and downright bloody minded but, as the old adage says, it was the same for everyone. At the end of Day One Chippenham were just ahead 6 and a half to 5 and a half playing 4BBB with our West Wilts GC 2019 Captain, Chris Trimby, teeing off first against Chippenham's Captain, Peter Russell. Day Two was a similar story with Chippenham just nudging ahead to leave 24 points up for grabs in singles matches on Sunday, the final day. The good news is Captain Bert Weedon led by example and romped home 6&5 against his opposite number, Adie Webb. The bad news is the remaining West Wilts Wagglers were not able to emulate their Captain which resulted in Chippenham, the current holders, winning the Ryder Cup Trophy by 16 games to 8. Nearest the pin prizes go to Kim Harrild, Dave Dance and Roger Antolik with Tom Smith carding the best individual score closely followed by those two old bus-passers, Alan Goldsworthy and Jeff Jones. No report would be complete without mentioning Ray White who has masterminded this unique Ryder Cup Trophy competition for at least the last 20 years, producing many lifelong friendships both on the course and at the 19th Hole, writes the author Martin Hicks-Lobbecke.
