West Wilts Golf Club - Wagglers record best 2016 victory

Some might describe it as the oldest local Derby in SW England as the Captain, Dieter Wakeling, briefed his hand picked team of intrepid warriors which consisted of 3 former Wagglers’ Captains. Having lost heavily 1-4 early in the season on 22nd June against Salisbury, the desire to restore honour was definitely part of the Wagglers’ game plan. Mention must be made of former Wagglers’ Captain, Dave Dance, who filled in at the last minute to allow significant strength in depth. The only unplanned event on the programme was a heavy squall at the outset which caught out those foolish enough not to carry an umbrella. The match result was a convincing 4-1 victory for West Wilts Wagglers, their best 2016 result to date. Those worthy of mention are Dave Edmunds and Jeff Jones who romped home 6 in 5 followed by Dave Dance and Colin Fourmy with a 5 in 4 win. As always, West Wilts GC hospitality at the 19th hole provided a perfect finale to a memorable battle of the giants.
In conclusion, have you wondered whether a player has ever had to leave a professional tournament after running out of balls? The answer is most definitely “Yes” in the case of Bill Krazert in Virginia, USA, way back in 1986. The occasion was the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic, almost on a par with the West Wilts GC Pro-Am, where his caddie took some balls out of Bill’s bag to lighten the load under very hot and humid weather conditions. Bill subsequently lost 3 balls, not a huge number you might think but it was enough to deplete his reserves. The Rules of Golf sponsored by the R&A and USGA do not allow borrowing or swapping of equipment so he had no option but to withdraw from the competition. Moral of the tale: always carry a sufficient supply of balls, maybe 9, which allows even those of us with a handicap of 17 to lose a ball on alternate holes.
