Wagglers v Chippenham ‘Ryder Cup’ Wagglers v Chippenham ‘Ryder Cup’

24 Wagglers have just returned from their annual three-day match against Chippenham Golf Club held over the weekend 17-19 April. This year's venue was the East Sussex National Golf Club and matches were played on both the East and West courses over a glorious sunny weekend with a keen wind adding to the excitement.

The matches have been contested annually for 17 years using a Ryder Cup-type scoring format based on 4BBB pairs matchplay on the first two days (Friday/Saturday) and individual matchplay on the Sunday. Matches are played on two or three different courses and include a two-night stay at a 4 or 5-star hotel/resort venue with the emphasis on variety and a good bar. This year both teams turned out 24 players and especial mention and thanks are due to Ray White who organises it all and shepherds the cats.

Traditionally West Wilts perform poorly on the Friday and catch-up as the weekend progresses and Chippenham’s capacity for beer wanes; this year was little different with Chippenham leading 9½-2½ going into Saturday's matches. Wagglers tend to perform better in the Sunday singles matches but could not recover the deficits of the first two days and the final result 31½ -16½ reinforces Chippenham's recent hold on the trophy with four consecutive wins.

Of the Wagglers only Pete Walton won his three matches whilst there were many contenders for the LOFT Award. Names to be published later.
