WWGC v Chippenham GC Ryder Cup Matches - Report
The annual West Wilts Wagglers v Chippenham ‘Ryder Cup’ matches were held this weekend in Cornwall at The Point at Polzeath and Trevose Golf Clubs.
24 players from each club played three rounds of matchplay; two in 4BBB format and the final day in singles. In between, a few pints were downed and headaches resolved.
The matches are organised each year by Ray White and Ernie Kee (Chippenham). The event is now into its 17th year and is held over three days. This year we played The Point at Polzeath en route to Trevose GC where we were based for the weekend; excellent accommodation, good food, a tremendous selection of local beers, and a course to die for.
The weather gods really looked after us too, with wall-to-wall sunshine on Friday and Saturday and we were quite grateful to have an overcast finish on Sunday to cool us down a tad. The Trevose prevailing SW winds did not materialise and we played in a fresh 2-club wind from the SE on Saturday with a 180-degeree shift on Sunday. Massive greens, running at about 10 on the stimpmeter made for some exciting golf not matched by conditions at home for both teams.
Friday’s matches saw West Wilts trailing by 3 points (7½ to 4½) going into Saturday’s fourballs at Trevose, where fortunes turned very slightly, but Chippenham retained the upperhand 7 matches to 5. Going into Sunday’s singles matches with 24 points up for grabs West Wilts players knew that a 15-9 win would be sufficient to return the trophy to Warminster. Despite some excellent play the team came up just one point short of overturning Chippenham’s lead and the result finished 24½ to 23½ points in their favour.
