Tony Bumstead excels and wins the Nairn Dunbar 5-day Open
At the 17th time of asking Tony Bumstead made it through 36-holes of qualifying and 5 rounds of matchplay to win the aptly-named Scottish Brewers Trophy.
A fantastic achievement for Tony and one which West Wilts can be rightly proud of, this being the 20th year of competing for some of the 'team'. Having prepared extensively over the weekend on a high carbohydrate and protein fuelled diet of steak and beer Tony qualified easily over Monday and Tuesday on a course which was in outstanding condition with greens the size of football pitches and speeds as fast as Usain Bolt.
The Nairn Dunbar 5-day Open has become one of West Wilts' golfers favourite events and this year 15 souls undertook the 550-mile journey to join another 190 golfers from across the country to do battle on the technical, and in places narrow course set amongst gorse and trees on the Moray Firth coast. A mix of weather conditions, both wet and dry, combined with periods of calm and strong, directionally-variable winds affected by the tides created extremely challenging conditions for most, with CSS numbers on both stroke play qualifying days being well above par.
After two days of stroke play Elliott James (net 149) qualified for the Scratch Section, Dean Huntley (net 151) for the Lower Handicap Section and Martin Bradbury (net 156), Bob (Willis) Williams (net 154), and Tony (net 150) qualifying for the Higher Handicap Section matchplays.

Highlights of the week.......Tony winning! Personally? Losing 6 balls in just one round including taking 5 balls off one tee and managing to draw (unheard of, so possibly a hook) the ball on the final hole into one of the BMW sponsor's 5 series estate cars parked next the putting ground,........and still managing to score net 80. Back next year? You bet!
