Seniors victorious against Farrington at home on Wednesday, 26th April 2017
With the memory of their defeat last week against Wells still lingering in their minds, the Seniors of West Wilts GC bounced back in strident form last Wednesday 26 April to record a 4 to 2 victory at home against Farrington GC.
The visitors fielded a strong team and the weather was far from benign with a strong, cool north easterly wind which felt more like January than April. Our Seniors played some amazing golf with the following individual results; Richard Triggol/Roly Jones won by 1, both Bill Powell/Dave Simpson and Gordon Walls/Dave Thackaberry won their matches in most impressive form by winning 6 in 5, many congratulations! Stephen Adams, Captain of The Seniors with Jack Winter and Kevin O'Mahony/Mike Bremridge all played well to finish with halves. As always, the 19th Hole was a welcome respite as discussions over missed putts and choice of club off the tee continued long after bedtime!

In 1937 the annual subscription, which had remained at 3 guineas for some years, was increased to 4 guineas with little opposition. For the younger readers out there, a guinea is 21 shillings and normally associated with the equestrian fraternity. Anyway, in 1939 discussions took place as to the possibility of building a new Club House on the top of the downs, with a roadway leading to it from Elm Hill. It was thought that a number of visitors were discouraged from playing at West Wilts due to the steep climb from the Club House (former site half way up hill on LHS by present water tank) to the first tee, followed immediately by having to play the first hole, currently the 10th, up the hill. Various schemes were considered with a view to financing the project but the response was not encouraging and therefore all designs were placed on the back burner until after World War II in 1952 when the current Club House was built (writes Martin Hicks-Lobbecke)
