Seniors Open Competition 2022
Report and Results
This year’s Seniors Open Competition took place on 7th July. Entries, which started in January, reached a record of 171, plus a waiting list of 7. Last minute cancellations, mainly due to Covid, caused severe changes to the starting sheet and absorbed the waiting list. The final number was 160. Of these, 117 were visitors to our Club on the day.
As usual the weather was perfect and Peter and Ruth put on a superb buffet, with nothing but praise from all of our participants.
Grateful thanks, as ever, go to the many helpers from the Ladies section and to Ivan Gower and Dave Johnston who all assisted in making it such a successful event, the biggest the Club undertakes annually.
Special thanks go to Alan Welch who helped me to cope with the many cancellations and refunds and ensured all monies were paid. Also, I would like to thank Lawrence Wilkin, our Club Manager, for his help especially with the new handicap system. This gave me additional work in putting down the three handicap calculations on each card, which obviously could not be done until the day before. His contribution was the best I have ever had, and we all should be pleased we have such a competent Club Manager.
At the prize giving, top scores were recorded of 41 points for Visitors and a West Wilts member. Unfortunately, Steve Brackley, our Seniors Captain, could not be present as he went down with Covid just beforehand. In his place, our Club Captain, Ernie Hiscock, kindly presented the prizes to a new record also of the 80% of winners still present at 5-40pm.
He thankfully acknowledged our £200 donation from the day to his two Captain’s charities this year, Dorothy House, and Wiltshire Air Ambulance.
A substantial amount was also raised for the Seniors Section to assist in its running.
Since the day we have had numerous messages of thanks for providing a great day and complimenting the Club on presenting such a magnificent course.
As you are aware, I am standing down this year in running the Open with which I have been involved for the past 20 years. In appreciation of my past services to the Club and Section, I was presented by Ernie Hiscock with an inscribed framed picture of the Club together with a John Lewis Voucher provided by the Seniors Section which I much appreciated. I wish all the best for the future.
