President's Day - Sunday 11th September 2016

The weather gurus have reported the hottest September since 1911 and Sunday 11th September at West Wilts Golf Club was certainly not gong to be a day for anoraks and umbrellas. The occasion was President's Day, hosted for the last time by Dave Hiscock, our President, who has held this prestigious post for the last three years. Under almost perfect weather conditions the stage was set for some record breaking stableford scores for anyone with aspirations of heading up the leaderboard. In the morning event there were 70 competitors divided into two divisions, one for handicaps below 16 and the other for those above 16. After lunch the format changed to a three players per team mixed Bowmaker.
The Division One and overall winner with a once in a lifetime round was Dharma Gurung who recorded an unbelievable level par round of 70. This performance comprised three birdies of which two were achieved on par threes. He scored 48 stableford points which is hugely impressive to those lesser golfing mortals amongst us and won a magnificent model Harley Davidson. You might think such a choice of prize somewhat incongruous asking what do a Harley and 48 points have in common? You guessed right, they are both leaders of the pack.

On a personal note, Dharma served as a Queen's Gurkha Officer (QGO) in The Royal Gurkha Signals and has now settled in UK with his wife and children. He was a key player in raising over £3,000 for the Appeal Fund following the recent devastating earthquake in Nepal. Dave Dredge came second with 42 points closely followed by Paul Davies with 41.
Viv Simpson won division two by the narrowest of margins, just pipping Andrew Sutton, with 39 points on countback. Andrew continued his run of excellence as a member of the winning bowmaker team in the afternoon accompanied by Gordon Walls and Jan Sargison. He also won nearest the pin on the 9th.

The bowmaker was won with an incredible score of 104 points which equates to 22 under par. In second place with a very respectable score of 93 points were Mike Jones, Viv warden and Marie Collis. At his prizegiving speech, President Dave Hiscock thanked his wife, Pat, for tolerating his appalling taste in socks and charmed her with a compensatory bunch of flowers. In conclusion, Dave paid tribute to our fantastic support team, namely, Chief Chef Peter Frankle and House Manager Sandra Frankle, thanking them for their major contribution to the ongoing success of West Wilts Golf club.
