Great Turnout For The West Wilts Golf Club's
Junior Open Competition held on Friday, 26th July 2024
What a difference a year makes! Last year’s competitors were greeted with extremely wet and breezy conditions but this year was completely different with warm sun/cloud and light winds making a very rare appearance this summer.
The Junior Open competition is open to golfers under the age of 18 at 1st of January 2024 and is made up of Gross and Nett competitions.
With a field of sixteen golfers (12 Boys and 4 Girls) representing twelve individual clubs from Wiltshire and Somerset.
The players, each of differing handicaps, the lowest being 2 and the highest being 25.4, set about taming the short but deceptively tricky course in order to get the best score possible.
The participants, regardless of how they had scored came back to the clubhouse (still smiling in most cases), to enjoy a hearty lunch, drink and banter with fellow competitors.
Thanks must go to the various volunteers from West Wilts GC who assisted on the day. This included WWGC’s current Captain Kim Harrild, Ivor Groskop (organiser on the day), Anne Hutchinson (WWGC Ladies Captain and her husband Steve), Jacky Hiscock WWGC Chairman and to Lawrence Wilkin, Sue Stanley and Pro shop staff for their administration skills and of course the catering staff for the wonderful refreshments/lunch after the competition.
The results of the Boys and Girls competitions were as follows:
Winner of Boys Gross competition: James Legg (Chippenham Golf Club)
Winner of Boys Nett competition: Freddie Hole (Manor House Golf Club)
Winner of Girls Gross competition: Millie Potter (Chippenham Golf Club)
Winner of Girls Nett competition: Lauren Cowley (Broome Manor Golf Club)
The West Wilts Junior Open also acted as a qualifying event for the Justin Rose/Telegraph junior golf championship. James, Freddie, Millie and Lauren’s scores will now be entered onto the national leader-board. The top scores (both gross and nett competitions) from around the country will qualify for the trip of a lifetime at the finals in Quinta do Lago, Portugal, later in the year.
In addition to the main Junior Open competition, West Wilts GC also ran “Nearest the Pin” competitions, the winners of these prizes being:
James Legg = 4th & 16th Holes (nearest the pin)
Toby Morris = 18th Hole (nearest the pin in two)
Millie Potter = Special award on the 18th Hole for nearest the pin in two)
Finally, Colin Fourmy, as West Wilts GC’s Junior Organiser, would personally like to take this opportunity to thank all the players for taking part in the event and wish all entrants the very best with their future golf. West Wilts GC wishes James, Freddie, Millie and Lauren every success should they reach the finals of the Justin Rose - Telegraph event and look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2025.
