First Team Match Report – Ogbourne (Away)
Sunday, 27th September
The First Team travelled to Ogbourne for their final league match of the season, looking to finish on a high following defeats against High Post and Broome Manor in their previous two fixtures.
With the league table extremely close, there was plenty riding on the final result. Broome Manor had already secured promotion, and Tidworth had been relegated, leaving West Wilts, High Post and Ogbourne battling for the remaining places. A win for West Wilts would move the team into second place and put them in a strong position to remain in Division 2, with High Post still to travel to Ogbourne on 3rd October.
Jac Parker and Tom Martin were first out and got off to the perfect start, with Jac driving the par-4 first to six feet before holing the putt for eagle. A high-quality and closely contested match went all the way to the final hole, with West Wilts securing the first point of the day with a 1 up victory.
Dave Wilkin and Ed Southy found themselves 2 down with three holes to play but produced an impressive comeback to finish all square. Dot Witcombe and Wayne Hemmens were third in and added another point with an excellent 5 up victory. The final West Wilts pairing were unable to get the result but battled well in difficult conditions.
The overall result was Ogbourne 2.5–3.5 West Wilts, a fantastic way to finish the league season and a result that moves the First Team into second place. With one fixture still to be played between Ogbourne and High Post, promotion is mathematically no longer possible but West Wilts are in a strong position to remain in Division 2 next season.
Thank you to everyone who has represented the First Team this season. It has been a highly competitive league, with an extremely high standard of golf throughout.
The First Team are also hosting a Race Night for members & their guests on Saturday 24th October. If you would like more information, please contact Tom.
