Club wins 50th Annual Match v Warminster Garrison
A Captain's Select team won the 50th annual match against the Garrison on Wednesday 14 October.
Guy Bettesworth led a team of 10 in the "Bayonet Trophy' match against Warminster Garrison to win 3-2 after some excellent golf was played by two very competitive teams in a fourball betterball matchplay format. The competition is an important and long-standing fixture in the club's history and was first played for in July 1966 when the Garrison presented the club with the trophy. The competition has previously been played for by the Directors against the School of Infantry, then the Directors against the Land Warfare Centre and is now settled on as the Club v The Garrison. The running total of wins and losses now stands at Club 25 wins, Garrison 20 wins and 5 halves.
Almost all the Garrison team are members of West Wilts so there was little home advantage for either side and scores reflected this local knowledge even though a strong easterly wind changed the complexion of some of the holes.
The match was followed by the traditional dinner and speeches during which both captains highlighted the value of the relationship between the club and the garrison.
