BUTHLAY CUP Update - Match 2 is an away loss to The Wiltshire GC BUTHLAY CUP Update - Match 2 is an away loss to The Wiltshire GC

As if to prove that home advantage really does have its merits the Lord Mayor’s Show of the first round was followed-up by the proverbial dustcart when the Club team went to play The Wiltshire in the second round on Saturday 13 June.

The Wiltshire team delivered some impressively solid play and the West Wilts pairings regrettably started weakly and spent most of the afternoon either hanging-on or maintaining a very slight advantage.

First round stars Alan Falconer and Al Brown maintained their 100% record coming in as our only winning pair 3-up, but unlike last week could not repair the damage done by a 3-down loss from Ossie Osborne and Geoff Titt and 4-down loss from Ken Bailie and Roger Antolik. The Captain’s pairing of Guy Bettesworth and Darren Munro achieved a very creditable half.

The tie was lost 4½:1½ with The Wiltshire earning the bonus point for having the aggregate holes-up score. The third round (of 5) takes place in early July and the Captain is already looking round for suitable talent. If you know of any, he can be contacted through the office or direct when you see him

BUTHLAY CUP - Match 1, Home win v Cumberwell Park GC

Reel out the pipers! The Jocks came to the rescue yesterday in a great battle on Elm Hill against Cumberwell Park Golf Club.

At Six thirty on Saturday, just as Arsenal scored their fourth goal in the FA Cup Final, the score was two matches won by Cumberwell, with an overall score of six holes up. It seemed as though the match was lost for West Wilts. Into the bar walk beaming Al Brown and Alan Falconer with the news they'd beaten the opposition by six holes. So the match finished two games each but West Wilts clinched it by a hole with an overall score of seven holes up against six holes up for Cumberwell.

Guy Bettesworth and Geoff Titt lost their match by three holes
Phil Harris and Ivor Groskop won by one hole
Neil Adams and Anton Newton lost by three holes. They were well and truly outplayed by some outstanding golf by Gary Smith who made six birdies and ended up with a two under par gross score of 67.

The next match takes place on June 13th at The Wiltshire. Captain Betty is coordinating these matches and will be in touch with the players he is selecting to take part.

The Buthlay Cup is a four ball better format organised by The Wiltshire County Golf Union. Three leagues play six matches each. Each match is decided with points awarded for wins plus points are awarded for the overall hole score. You can read about it here Click here to read more about the Buthlay Cup Competition
