BRASS MONKEYS – ROUND 1
Round 1 (of 3) of one of the most popular club competitions was held on Sunday 5 November.
34 teams started on a course described by some old hands as being in the best condition for this time of year for a very long time. Despite heavy rains on Saturday all the greens were in excellent condition and the scores reflected this.
It was a beautiful day to play golf, a bit brassy on the north side of the course as a winter wind moderated the heat of the sun and the course was feisty enough to present a fair challenge off the yellow tees. Round 1 (of 3) is 4BBB format with an upper handicap limit of 18, and the first day is the one where you don’t win it but can lose it.
Heading the field on their own after Day 1 is the pairing of Kevin Murphy & Tony Walker with an excellent 45pts, followed by Andrew Sutton & Stuart Beggs with 44 and half the field within 5 points of the leaders. The full Round 1 results list is below.
Last year’s winners Ed Harris-Southey and Colin Williams got off to a rather slow start and are 7pts off the pace with a score of 38. Club Champion Iain Ferrie, competing for the first time in the event with partner Martin Bradbury is well placed with 41pts.
The next round on 19 November is Greensomes format and is traditionally the day that the podium contenders stick their heads above the parapet.
