BRASS MONKEYS - Competition Results & Report
The annual Brass Monkeys competition benefited from tremendous autumn conditions to finish before Christmas.
The Brass Monkeys three-round pairs competition has traditionally been blighted by weather delays, but this year only one weekend was weather affected and the competition remained on schedule for a pre-Christmas finish. The format of 4BBB, Greensomes and Foursomes finale is one of the most eagerly awaited and well supported of our competitions and as usual it did not fail to deliver unexpected winners and see the expected 'dead certs' fail at one of the hurdles. Results of all three rounds and a compiled overall finishing position results sheet are below.
Leaders after the first round 4BBB were Mike White & Dean Huntley (44pts) who pulled out a two-point lead over a chasing pack of 5 pairings on 42pts with another 3 pairings on 41pts, and the eventual winners another shot back in 10th place alone on 40pts.
The second round of Greensomes should theoretically have favoured the lower handicap pairings but White & Huntley failed to capitalise on their lead and finished 7pts down on second round winners Al Falconer & Al Brown (41pts). Also failing to capitalise on their first round score were the First Team pairing of Elliot James & Kevin Lucas who similarly disappointed, leaving only Tige Ladd & Stuart Beggs (38pts) to maintain the chase in second place with two good rounds behind the then leading pair of Falconer & Brown (82pts).
Falconer & Brown (82pts) were unable to play the third round Foursomes and their absence opened up the competition to any one of 9 teams that were within 3pts of the lead which Ladd & Beggs (80pts) took into the final round. Outstanding rounds of 43pts by Club Captain Guy Bettesworth & Colin Williamson and the pairing of Tony & Steve McFerran saw the Captain taking honours on count-back. The anticipated Ladd & Beggs' challenge faded but first round winners White & Huntley made good the disappointment of their second round and finished with a creditable 42pts but were unable to haul back the McFerran's total of 122pts and finished in second place overall with 120pts.
