West Wilts GC Directors' Cups contested under perfect weather conditions Sunday 6th August 2017
After the incessant rain of the recent past, 57 players set off with a definite spring in their swing and not an umbrella in sight to contest The Directors' Cups on Sunday 6th August 2017.
Neil Bungay, Head Greenkeeper together with his team, are to be congratulated on presenting the greens in an immaculate condition. The competition was off white tees in a stableford format on full handicap and the author with Andy Sutton felt highly honoured to be drawn in the first flight with Captain 2017 Steve Few. Under almost perfect weather conditions the trio enjoyed each other's company in the true tradition of golf without one ball lost, a rapid pace of play and the author in a talkative but not distractive mode. The results by Division were as follows: Division 1 (0-12 handicap) Ist Mike Callaway with 41 points, 2nd Richard Hartley with 40 points, 3rd Darren Munro with 38 points (on count back). Division 2 (13-24 handicap) 1st Duncan Ashman with 41 points, shown in photo receiving his Cup from Captain 2017 Steve Few, 2nd Nathan Rose with 39 points (on count back), 3rd Mike Smith with 38 points, 4th Martin Hicks-Lobbecke with 38 points (on count back). There were 6 twos recorded which resulted in the grand prize of £18.66 each, not a life changing sum but enough to brighten up your day.
The Seniors have been in action since my last report and entertained players from The Mendip GC at home on Thursday 3rd August. The rain held off but with strong prevailing winds the course was a challenge for both home and visiting players. Steve Adams, Captain of The Seniors, records two outstanding performances, namely, Ivan Gower/John Nash winning four in three and Richard Triggol/Bob Earnshaw, first game back after a shoulder injury, winning five in four. Other winners were John Barnes/Steve Brackley by one hole. David Johnson/Captain Steve Adams managed to sneak in with a halve. Match result was a three and a half to two and a half win for The Seniors. 19th Hole endless discussions continued well into the hours of darkness over fine food and liquid refreshment.
Let's finish with a few extracts from "The Book of Golfing Quotations." Lee Westwood once wrote of Tiger Woods,"Tiger is a great guy, probably the most professional sportsman in the world, but the intensity of his life is just ridiculous. That was really brought home to me when he explained why he loved scuba diving so much. He said it was because the fish didn't recognise him". Jack Nicklaus who has finished second over 55 times wrote, "People don't seem to realise how often you have to come in second in order to finish first. I've never met a winner who hadn't learned to how to be a loser." Bernard Langer commented about his getting the dreaded yips in the 1970s, "There's no word for it. Germans don't have yips". That's all for now, see you again next week, writes author Martin Hicks-Lobbecke.
