Managerial masterclass leads to an historic first defeat of Tidworth.
With a managerial masterstroke reminiscent of Alec Ferguson’s style the new Wagglers Captain Jeff Jones achieved one of the biggest upsets of recent seasons by beating Tidworth at Tidworth for the first time in the history of the matches.
Reversing the humiliating midweek defeat at the hands of the Seniors Jeff sacked his entire team and replaced them with a mix of youth, ambition and experience (yes, Alan Goldsworthy and Dave Dance were recalled!).
A strong and confident Tidworth team who chose to play off the back tees (to make it difficult for the Waggler 'shorties') were left reeling in the Wagglers’ wake. A fresh, and uncharacteristic north-easterly wind blew throughout the sunny afternoon and this may well have been Tidworth’s undoing at the hands of an experienced West Wilts team more used to gale force golf. The match result of 4-1 was met with disbelief by Tidworth who will relish their chance for revenge at the return match on 22 April, so if you want some very competitive golf, do volunteer for the match to give Geoff a fighting chance to complete the season double.
The Tidworth track was in excellent condition and the greens were fast and true; do try and visit if you can, it’s a treat at the moment.
