Stephen Few, Club Captain 2017 leads West Wilts GC Team to a resounding 5 to 1 victory in first round of Buthlay Cup on Saturday, 8th April 2017
Before you ask the question, let me tell you a bit about the history of The Buthlay Cup. The Trophy is named after the late Ron Buthlay who was a member of Kingsdown GC for many years and held the prestigious appointment as Secretary of The Wiltshire County Golf Union. The Cup is competed for annually by Wiltshire golf club male members with handicaps ranging from 6 to 28. In 2017 the Cup consists of three leagues each comprising six clubs. West Wilts GC is drawn in the Green League against: Salisbury and SW Wilts, Kingsdown, Woodbridge Park,The Wiltshire and Upavon. Teams consist of eight players who compete in a 4BBB format within their leagues leading to a knockout phase and final on Saturday 23rd September 2017.
The great news is that Stephen Few, our Club Captain 2017, led his team to a convincing first round 5 to 1 away win against Salisbury and SW Wilts . Those of us who have played and struggled with the particular challenges of South Wilts will admire the scale of this achievement for which Stephen deserves a definite gold star from all our members. Individual performances were as follows:
Captain Stephen Few/Pete Laidlaw won 3 up
Tony Bumstead/Martin Bradbury won 2 up
Brian Cundick/Rupert Williams won 2 up
President Ivor Groskop/Geoff Simms lost 1 down
The Cup rules specify that a 3 to 1 win plus 2 bonus points, one for the match and one for most holes won, brings the final tally to a 5 to 1 win, many congratulations to all players. (writes Martin Hicks-Lobbecke)
