Ladies and Seniors share the excitement of a Texas Scramble at West Wilts GC on Thursday, 13th April 2017 Ladies and Seniors share the excitement of a Texas Scramble at West Wilts GC on Thursday, 13th April 2017

For regular readers of my Golf Round Up the format of a Texas Scramble holds no mysteries but there may be some of you who require further explanation.
With its origins back in Texas of the 1950s, it combines 4 players as a team, in our case two Ladies and two Gentlemen. The team must select each player's drive four times and at least one par 3. Each team will range from high to low handicap with 10% of gross combined total handicap deducted on completion. Once a drive has been chosen it becomes the ball in play and the remaining team members play from that marked spot. You can imagine that some really low scores were possible as nine teams competed under almost clear skies but with woolly jumpers a definite accoutrements for the majority. The results were as follows:

Winners with a nett 60.4: Pearl Penny, Pat Harper, John Walpole and Dave Simpson
Runners Up with a nett 62.1: Pam Forsey (Ladies' Captain), Gillian Wood, Alan Warden and Stephen Adams (Seniors' Captain)
Third with a nett 63: Marie Colliss, Jan Sargison, Martin Hicks-Lobbecke and Ken Pearce

As always, let us conclude with some fun quotations from golfing history. "What other sport holds out hope of improvement to a man or woman over fifty? The room for improvement is so vast that that three lifetimes could be spent roaming the fairways carving away at it, convinced that perfection lies just over the next rise"." I rather liked the following from Jack Nicklaus, in my opinion the greatest golfer of all time, who finished second over 55 times, "People don't seem to realize how often you have to come in second in order to finish first.......I've never met a winner who hadn't learned how to be a loser" (writes author Martin Hicks-Lobbecke)
